Living Well with Parkinsons Disease

Another voice for the cure

News that 11-time Grammy winner Linda Ronstadt has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease has renewed discussion about how we fund medical research in our country.

Many see Ronstadt’s personal tragedy as an opportunity to gain another celebrity’s help in attracting greater funds for PD research. As grateful as I am for all that Michael J. Fox and other celebrities have done and continue to do to advance the fight against Parkinson’s, I do not want anyone else, famous or not, to have to be sacrificed for “the greater good” of our extended community.

Those of us who live with PD are very aware of how long it takes and how expensive it is to bring a new drug to market. That does not make it acceptable to put the onus for funding the cure on the backs of the sick (famous or not), their families, and their friends. If we have to depend on car washes, bake sales, and charity walks, runs, and bike rides, neither we nor our children will likely see the cure for PD in our lifetimes. We don’t need more spokespeople… we need a cure, and we need it NOW. We can do this if we put our nation’s priorities in order.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about a cure for PD… I completely understand where you are coming from and wanted to share with you my similar perspective. It is just crazy and sad what PD does to people, isn’t it? Sometimes, I just so impatient with the wait for a cure. Here is my post if I may share with you:

WITH MONEY BEING POURED IN BY PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES AND INSTITUTIONS FOR RESEARCH,THE SCENARIO IS INDEED BRIGHT
BUT IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS HYPE,ONE IS A BIT WORRIED .WHAT IF THE RESEARCH DOESN’T DELIVER THE GOODS.HOW CAN ONE BE SURE THAT THE RESEARCH WORK BEING DONE IS REPORTED TO US IN A TRANSPARENT MANNER.ARE THE NEGATIVE ASPECTS ALSO BEING REPORTED.WHO WILL BE AN UNBAISED REFEREE HERE
